the passion of aslan

(inspired by steve k)
for anyone who has not watched or read the chronicles of narnia, leave now if you do not want it spoiled for you. as we were watching this movie in the theatre, i could hear jen sniffling beside me. at first i thought, "i didn't think this movie would make me cry". but as lucy and susan walked with aslan through the night, and then he went on alone....i began to understand. even though this is a disney movie, and not even rated pg-13, the following scenes wre intense. i couldn't help drawing the parallel with the Passion of the Christ. the gore cannot even be compared, because in the chronicles, you see no blood, nothing - but the intensity of the sacrifice is far different. there is not an overwhelming shock factor at the blood or the pain. instead, there is emotional pain watching aslan die. he sacrifices himself to mockery, torture and death, all for brat-faced edmund. me. this beautiful, majestic, intense leader is shaved and defenseless, by choice, for me. rejected so that i may be accepted.

people say life is all about relationships. i would agree. that's why the isolation of Jesus dying on the cross was such agony for him, for God. that's why we live in agony until we realize the unfair reconciliation we are offered. sometimes i don't like to use fancy church words like reconciliation, but when we stop and think of the depth of the act, there is no other description for the huge grace God gives us to be able to be in relationship with him. the story of aslan depicts this intense and one-of-a-kind relationship perfectly. as garret said, "i just wanted to stand up and yell at everyone in the theatre, 'that's Jesus! he loves you that much!!'" the most beautiful thing about this story? aslan returns and wins. the death is not significant or victorious until he comes back. and he does! Jesus is alive, and we are made alive with him, through his death!! how crazy is that.

the chronicles of narnia is the passion of christ. his passion is you - relationship with you. love - for you.

I agree! "... huge grace God gives us to be able to be in relationship with him. the story of aslan depicts this intense and one-of-a-kind relationship perfectly" Just makes me want be at the feet of Jesus always and worship Him for his beyond our human understanding level of Grace.

I saw the movie last night. It was amazing. I cried.
It showed a different perspective of the sacrifice of Christ. I understand and related to this type of sacrifice (actually, I should say it touched my heart in a different but incredible way) when I didn't see the gore, but saw the reason behind the sacrifice. It made sense. But not at all.
o Jesus, thank you!

so i finally saw the movie so now i can read your post. i agree that i was quite moved by the death, but in knowing that there's a parallel with Jesus i had hope, i knew he would rise again so it wasn't so bad for me. it was kinda a cool feeling like the hope we have now that He'll come back for us, cause on earth now He's kinda 'dead' (not at all really, he's just absent... sorta... i think you get my parallel). it also made the sacrifice more apparent to me. Aslan could have easly fought back and won, and in the crusifiction story it is more difficult for us as humans to imagine how powerful Jesus was, it is difficult to get past our view as him as a man. haha.. oh well this all made sense in my head!!
